A menu your Koi will really enjoy...

Hikari Koi Food Menu

Of course it's based on Hikari - simply because Hikari is the best Koi fish food in the world and we wouldn't even dream of feeding our babies anything of lesser quality. Also check out our Koi treats page for some cool recipes...

But if you are feeding a substitute food you can use your preferred Koi food (until it is all used up and you switch to Hikari of course!).

We have come up with a 7 day Koi feeding menu. Bear in mind that nothing in Koi, and especially when it comes to feeding, is a hard and fast rule. If you have superb filtration bear in mind that you can still overdo it eve with the best intentions in the world. Overstocking is a killer of fish and Koi in particular as is OVERFEEDING!

Remember to rather always feed more small meals (comprising the same weight of food) over a day rather than one big meal. Although if you can only feed one meal a day your Koi will not complain - you may have noticed that a Happy Healthy Koi's favourite past time is that of Eating.

Koi generally are not too fussy about their food. Pretty much anything will do but don't go overboard when it comes to variety. Koi are Fish and fillet steak is not exactly what one would call a typical 'Fish Diet'. Neither is ox liver, dog pellets, or cheese.

Please note that this is just a suggestion. We make no warranties or guarantees and if you kill your fish even with kindness please don't hold us liable!

So here goes.

Summer Diet for water temperatures between 20 and 30C.

Note that if the temperature exceeds 30C you should reduce feeding and temperatures higher than 35C can be dangerous for your fish.

This is the fun season for owning Koi. They are active, and hungry. In point of fact you can feed your Koi as often as you like but on no accounts exceed more than 2% of body mass per day and only feed at this rate if you truly have superb filtration. 1% of body mass is more than acceptable. ALWAYS, ALWAYS do a water test first thing in the morning if you are not sure. If there is any residual ammonia or nitrite you have a real problem. If not, check 2 hours after feeding, and 2 hours again after that (without feeding in between!). Ideally your filter system should reduce all ammonia and nitrites down to zero within a 6 to 8 hour period.

Note that Din Dins is the last meal of the day and should be fed at least an hour before sunset. Breakfast is the first meal and should not be fed for at least an hour after sunrise

NOTES   If you miss Lunch during the week, feed the Lunch meal as Din Dins If you miss Lunch during the week, feed the Lunch meal as Din Dins You can substitute any meal with Hikari Staple or Hikari Gold.
You can substitute between 4 and 8 meals a week with a High End Product.

Treats for Koi. Mix these up a bit - you will find out which work best for your Koi. It's normally best to switch your pumps and filters off when feeding treats so that you can see exactly what is going on and how much the fish are actually eating and how much is ending up in the filter system.

Remember it takes time for your fish to adjust to new foods, so persist with them for a while.

Brown / Wholeweat Bread

Feed only once a week. As much as the Koi will finish in 3 minutes. You can cube the bread into large chunks if you like - and avoid it getting into the filters. You can add a good quality plain yoghurt culture and a little honey if you like. Don't go overboard with bread - it's not an easily digestible food for Koi.
Silkworm Pupae These are very high in protein and will result in high growth. Do not overfeed but you can feed these at every treat session if you like. You can also substitute them for a growth feed meal every now and then.
Oranges/Ruby Grapefruit Don't use lemons! Cut the oranges up into sixteenths. Remember to remove the rinds from the pond.
Earthworms Be sure of your source! Garden earthworms will carry parasites. Check your supplier for clean worms.
Chinese Cabbage Slice this into largish chunks. Watch the filters as this cabbage is pretty fibrous...
Lettuce Roughly tear this and chuck it in. Excellent water lily substitute!
Tomatoes Due to their acidic nature go easy on these. I have seen Koi go mad for tomatoes!
Crab sticks/Shrimp/Prawns Defrost these and feed in moderation. Koi love crab sticks. Same goes for shrimp and prawns. Peel these and feed raw. Or saute lightly with some lemon butter and eat them yourself.
