Koi pond maintenanceKoi pond maintenance is a vital task that every Koi keeper has to undergo regularly. Basically the routine is one in which waste material is removed from the Koi pond, fresh water is added, top up additives are added, equipment is inspected and repairs carried out. Typically 90% of maintenance takes place at the filters. This involves removing toxic waste material, flushing the filters of debris, etc. If all is going well in your Koi pond system as a whole, regular maintenance shouldn't take more than a few minutes once a day (as in feeding the Koi) and perhaps an hour or so once a week. Some filtration systems require more maintenance depending on the season than others. However as a rough rule of thumb regular weekly pond maintenance involves flushing water through the filters to remove the build up of solid debris that has accumulated since the last maintenance was carried out. At the same time a good 10% water change should also take place. Regular water changes of this magnitude has the benefits of removing waste build up (such as nitrates) as well as replacing vital trace elements in the pond water body. Trace elements should also be regularly supplemented through the use of a product like montmorillonite clay as Koi ponds when operating in full cry will make use of these elements quickly. Regular maintenance ensures that the operations of the Koi pond are kept stable. It gives you the opportunity to spot any potential problems before they become critical problems. It gives you the opportunity to inspect your Koi pond equipment and your filtration systems, and of course it keeps you on the pulse of what is happening in your Koi pond. It is a valuable feedback mechanism. Regular maintenance need not be a chore especially if you plan and design your Koi pond and its filtration properly from the very beginning. You can make your life as easy as possible and although there is no such thing as a zero maintenance Koi pond or filter system, you can minimise the time you spend with it and more time enjoying your Koi. |
